DESCRIPTION:If you would like to consider this question then can we invite you to join any one or more of the BOOK DISCUSSIONS planned for this year? \n \nDuring 2023 our minister\, Alan Childs\, invites anyone who would like to join in a monthly book discussion group with a PROGRESSIVE theological inclination. \n \n\nIf you would like to develop and refresh your understanding of God\, the Bible\, faith\, the church and your life as a Christian\, and be challenged in the process\, then please consider joining the group for a monthly\, in person\, conversation about one book at a time. \n\n\n \nHere are the books that form the reading list\, divided into two parts for the year. The books are available through any of the online bookstores (including Bookshop.org which feeds profit back to independent bookshops)\, many high street bookshops\, or from the authors themselves. \n \nFebruary to May (4pm on the last Sunday of the month at Craigsbank Church hall) \n \n1 – What Is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems\, Letters\, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything by Rob Bell (26 February) NOTE THIS ONE SESSION WILL START AT 5pm \n \n2 – Freeing Jesus: Rediscovering Jesus as Friend\, Teacher\, Savior\, Lord\, Way\, and Presence by Diana Butler-Bass (26 March) \n \n3 – Searching for Sunday: Loving\, Leaving\, and Finding the Church by Rachel Held Evans (30 April) \n \n4 – Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People by Nadia Bolz-Weber (28 May) \n \nAugust to November (4pm on the last Sunday of the month at East Craigs Community Centre) \n \n1 – Inspired: Slaying Giants\, Walking on Water\, and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans (27 August) \n \n2 – Jesus Unexpected: Ending the End Times to Become the Second Coming by Keith Giles (24 September) \n \n3 – Faith after Doubt: Why Your Beliefs Stopped Working and What to Do about It by Brian D. McLaren (29 October) \n \n4 – The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne (26 November) \n \n\nEach book’s discussion will be held late on a Sunday afternoon over a glass of wine or a mug of coffee (your choice). SUMMARY:Christingle - A Magical Christmas Eve
DESCRIPTION:Something magical happens at 6.00pm on Christmas Eve at Craigsbank. Families\, friends\, those home for Christmas and those who are simply curious to see what happens\, ALL gather to celebrate Christmas eve with joyful music and carols – and to create ‘Christingles’. \nWhat is a Christingle? As they arrive\, every child will receive an orange\, a ribbon and some sweeties and raisins – and a candle. As the hour goes by\, they will be encouraged to decorate the orange and light the candle\, creating their own Christingles: \n\nThe orange represents the world\nThe ribbon symbolises the love and blood of Christ\nCocktail sticks represent North\, South\, East and West\nThe sweets and raisins represent all of God’s creations\nThe candle is inserted into a small cut at the top of the orange and brings Jesus’ light to the world\, bringing hope in the darkness\n\nThe Christingle can be traced all the way back to 1747 when a bishop in Germany looked for a simply way to explain the happiness brought to the world through Jesus. The Christingle was the result and the word itself comes from the German word\, ‘Christkindl’ or Little Christ Child. It came back into fashion around 50 years ago in Europe and itself now spreads happiness in communities around the world on Christmas Eve. \n  \nDon’t miss out on this joyful event. 6.00pm on Christmas Eve

We want to help make that a reality. \nEvery year\, members of the congregation and friends of Craigsbank and East Craigs\, kindly donate gifts for children from birth to mid teens who have a parent in prison in the Edinburgh area. This year the dates for our Gift Service are the first Sunday of December (4) at Craigsbank and the second Sunday of December (11) at East Craigs. \nPlease dig deep once again. We ask for new gifts – toys/books/soft toys for children of all ages from birth to teens to be brought to the church UNWRAPPED. \nJackie Rankine will collect the toys after the services and arrange for our contact person from Saughton Prison to collect them on Monday 12 December. \nPlease contact Jackie or the Church Office with any questions.
