CHALMERS LECTURES
The 1st of the Chalmers Lectures about "Reforming the Kirk"
discusses church decline since the 1960s. The speaker, Doug
Gay, is very outspoken at times and you will hear phrases such
as "joyless formalism" ,"funerial communions", "trite pietism" and
"dull mediocrity of middle of the road traditionalism" when he
describes aspects of the Church of Scotland. He is also critical of
the traditional system of elders and minister taking charge of running
the parish church as in our type of Presbyterianism because he says
it has meant that the wishes of the congregation have not been as
central a point as they should have been since by church law the
Kirk Session is not answerable to the congregation.
