General Assembly opening procession

The 2018 General Assembly gets underway on 19 May with the installation of Rev Susan Brown as this year's Moderator.

During the week commissioners will discuss reports, vote on church law and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women to the ministry of word and sacrament.

  Moderator pays tribute to war dead in Islay  
 
 

The Moderator of the General Assembly has paid tribute to hundreds of American soldiers and crew who lost their lives in two separate ship wrecks off the coast of Islay a century ago.

A commemorative service in Port Ellen also remembered the valiant efforts of the islanders who tried to rescue them and the 200 Islay men who died during the Great War.

The Church of Scotland Guild has chosen six life-changing projects from Scotland and around the world to receive fundraising support over the next three years.

The last fundraising cycle, which is drawing to a close, raised more than £600,000 for charities chosen in 2015.

  Women's ordination 50th anniversary walk  
 
 

The 50th anniversary of the ordination of women to the ministry of word and sacrament will be marked on Tuesday 22 May at 1.15pm with a procession from the foot of the Mound to New College quad in Edinburgh.

Women ministers will lead the procession followed by family, friends, colleagues and everyone who would like to add their support. The Moderator will lead a prayer in the quad before entering the General Assembly Hall for the afternoon session.

The director of an organisation overseeing reconstruction work in Nepal following a deadly earthquake has urged Scots not to be “cynical” about foreign aid.

Joel Hafvenstein said it would have been “impossible” for the United Mission to Nepal, (UMN) and its local partners to help thousands of people rebuild their shattered communities if it wasn’t for £310,000 donated by generous Church of Scotland members.

  Emotional family tribute to Kirk missionary heroine  
 
 

The niece of a Scot who gave her life to help protect Jewish schoolgirls during the Holocaust has paid an emotional visit to the Nazi extermination camp where she died.

Deirdre MacDowell said it was “overwhelming” to lead a memorial service to Jane Haining outside the block at Auschwitz-Birkenau where her aunt is said to have spent her final hours.
