Sewing Seeds in the Western Expansion
Reaching out and making friends
Until very recently, it was fair to say that Craigsbank Church sat at the very edge of Edinburgh – to the west of Corstorphine and the west of the city. Fifty years ago the surrounding land was mostly farmland but slowly, land use has changed and we are now delighted to find ourselves sitting side-by-side with new neighbours as housing developments take shape down the Maybury Road from the Maybury to Cammo, and in West Craigs Village, along Turnhouse Road to the end of the runway at Edinburgh International Airport. The neighbours moving in are friends we are slowly getting to meet.
The West Craigs development takes a community of two small streets that have stood for more than 60 years – West Craigs Avenue and Crescent – along with the Lennie cottages sitting beside Turnhouse Golf Club – and builds out, right along Turnhouse Road. The 1700+ new homes are all shapes and sizes but a particular focus is placed on homes for families, with the inclusion of two, five-acre parks, a primary school (now open) and nursery, a health centre and cafe. You can read more about the plans here.
Plans are now in place for further development from the Maybury out along the main Glasgow Road, past the tram hub and towards the airport.
These new developments offer cycle paths and walking routes and link-in to ‘active Edinburgh’.
Working with the Old Parish in Corstorphine, we are keen to embrace the new communities and look forward to finding new paths to faith together. We will learn from one another and grow.
In the other direction, stretching out from the Maybury to Cammo, Cammo Meadows is being developed with a mix of apartments and houses right on the edge of the 80 acre Cammo Estate. These houses lie within the Parish of Crammond but we welcome those who move in as our neighbours.
A Christmas opportunity to say hello to new neighbours
On 8 December 2024, our small group of friends hosted an hour of Christmas cheer at Turnhouse Golf Club. This was a chance for those who have now moved in to the area to meet each other, for the children to enjoy games and crafts and storytelling and for the adults to chat over coffee and mince pies. It was a delight! More than 60 folks from the area joined in the chaos with chatter, laughter and song. Our next event will be promoted here soon.
